Affrimations Big Bash

Last weekend Ryan and I attended the Affirmations "Big Bash." Affirmations is the Detroit area GLBT community center/organization that most people have walked past in Downtown Ferndale.

Ryan and I were invited by one of ryan's contacts from higher ed...It was a really enjoyable evening. We went out to buy new suits the week before so we could look our best! Unfortunately, we forgot to take any pictures!

The event was $175 a person, so I was expecting a nice meal. We had stir-fry tofu and it was yummy! The event was held at the brand new "MGM Grand Detroit." The hotel/casino is very nice and I hope we have a chance to go back! I really want to eat at some of the nice restaurants (Wolfgang Puck...etc.)

Fun times!

Snickers Commericial

Why did the "Gay Community" flip out about this??? It is a commerical for a yummy candy bar...

Not homophobic, not making fun of gays, not really offensive in anyway!

Yet their objections get it pulled from use

What is wrong with the gay leaders...no wonder why people think there is a large scale "gay agenda" being pushed from the left!!!

It's a Gay Day....

Yesterday the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, Pastor Haggard resigned from his post. Surprise!!! Mr. Holy man has spoken out against LGBT rights for many years got caught up in his own little gay affair.

A male prostitute/drug dealer has alleged that Haggard has been using meth and having sex with him for the past 3 years. Wow! Why is it that these so-called family value leaders can speak out against gay rights and at the same time turn out to be gay themselves.

Haggard has denied having sex with the man, but did admit to buying drugs and getting a massage from him.

I guess it is very normal behavior for a conservative christian to pay for a massage from his drug dealer male whore...What was I thinking?

Voters in Colorado and seven other states get ready to decide in Tuesday's national election on amendments banning same-sex marriage. Wake up Coloradians...forget about gay marriage...it is time for a constitutional amendment banning republican sex scandals.

Is Dick Devos Gay???

I was just watching a commercial by Dr. Dobson (anti-gay goofball) which states that family values have taken a large blow because of the New Jersey Supreme court decision AND a gay-activist in Michigan.

According to Dobson, he (the gay activist)has been spending millions of dollars to fill the airwaves promoting his beliefs. I am sitting here trying to figure out who "he" is...The only ads I see are for Michael Bouchard and Dick Devos (Both Republicans running for US Senate and MI Gov.)

The only MAN running for statewide office is Dick Devos (R-Cand for Gov). There are a few other men running, but no one that can afford any publicity campaigns (Amos Williams)

So is Dobson saying that Dick Devos is gay? Mike Bouchard? What is going on???

I have a feeling I know the answer to this - It's all about scaring people to get out and vote.

James Dobson is probably airing this commercial in numerous states. His script goes a little something like this...

Family Values....blah blah blah...Activist Judges in New Jersey...blah blah blah...Gay rights activist is the state of ___________(fill in the blank.)

How frustrating!!!!

Lance Bass is out of the closet!!!!

I have always had a thing for Lance Bass...

I remember when Brianna and I went to see him in Mt Pleasant in April of 2004 (I even blogged about it...)

People always assumed he was gay but just trying to protect his career by staying in the closet...well I guess they were right!

Good Job Lance for coming out, but it seems a little late. Just think about the impact he would have made if he came out years ago.

Gay Marriage and Hillary Clinton

There are some in the LBGT "community" who are pissed off at Senator Clinton right now...Why???? Because she is against "Gay Marriage" but is for Civil Unions.

I am very torn to how I feel about her statements. On one hand, I feel that she is letting down GLBT supporters by not supporting equal rights. On the other hand, I understand that in order for her to win elections, she must go with the populist vote.

If it is true that only 35-40% of Americans support Gay Marriage, then Hillary is taking the right stance.

In order for a democrat to win any office, they must not be viewed as a leftist liberal. The republicans are doing enough right now to lose the respect of the nation...The Dems only chance is to remain very neutral to rise above the republican f*ck ups.

Of course I want Gay Marriages to be legal...

But I would settle for legalized civil unions as well. I really believe that all marriages should be civil unions - that is, a union recognized by the state, and nothing else. If a couple decides to have a religious "marriage," then it would be their choice. The government really should not care if two people are married at all...

Just my thoughts...What do you think?

I think I am ill....The State of the Union Address

The state of the Union was today....

Not too exciting. No big surprises. 75% of the speech dealt with the war. I did like his ideas of spending more on AP classes in schools. Also - his idea of cutting "pork spending." Kind of shocking...because most of his republicans are GUILTY of it! I didn't like his excitement in cutting "needless programs." Of course, all of these "needless" programs help the poor of our country.

and then the democrats (my party) gets Gov. Tim Kaine to to the democratic response. He was clearly reading from a prompter...it sounded very s-l-o-w. Also...way too much god in his response...(Yes Kris...I know that it was intentional - but still bothersome)...No other dems were available to do it????

Who cares about the Gov. of Virginia. hummmmmmm.

"God Bless the United States of America....and f**k the president"

(*note to US Secret Service...When I said "F**k the president", this is not meant as a threat...I actually enjoy listening to the pres...he makes me laugh - but I do tend to disagree with a lot he has to say)

We are going to the movies tonight! Can you believe that Brokeback Mountain is actually playing in Saginaw??? It took a few weeks to get up here, but I am glad to be able to see it. It doesn't really look like my kind of movie (I am more of a dumb, stupid comedy type), but I really want to support the movie theater for bringing it to the bible belt of the US!

you and Ryan where like she is I would let you both die too! What you two
are doing is wrong in the eyes of God and you should repent to have your

Let me say that I appreciate you stoping by my site. Thank you for your kind words about my "lifesytle." I am so glad that you would "let me die!!!" Fw: Important ballot information

This is a forward from the Detroit Free Press about the upcoming vote. On the ballot will unfortunately be a very important proposal to us. Michigan voters will decide on Nov 2 to amend the state constitution to exclude gay couples from forming unions. This amendment will not only outlaw "gay marriages" but will prohibit the state govenment from recognizing our relationships in any way. Under current law, Ryan's employer (a state university) is allowed to offer domestic partner benefits. Thankfully I have insurance from my own employer...but we have friends that could lose medical insurance for both their partner and their children.

In just 7 weeks, all of this could be changed for the worse.

I understand that not everyone is open minded to the thought of two men being married and some people find homosexuality to be completey wrong. I have faith that my family and friends will see through this hatred and not vote for discrimination!

Please take a look and pass this on to anyone who you might think would be helped by having a better understanding of just what it means.

If you have not already registered to vote, please do so!!! The deadline in Michigan is October 2nd. You can even register online at https://electionimpact.votenet.com/johnkerry/

Questions, answers on Michigan gay marriage issue
BY DAWSON BELL, FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Michigan voters will join those from 10 other states on Nov. 2 to decide whether to amend the state constitution to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The proposal, brought to the ballot by a petition drive after the Legislature declined to approve it, is intended to block recognition of same-sex marriages in Michigan, something its backers fear could be foisted on the state by the courts. Opponents call the proposal an extreme reaction to a non-threat that will undermine basic civil rights for gays and lesbians, and even some heterosexuals who benefit from employers' gay-friendly policies.

This side of the presidential election, the marriage proposal has the potential to become the most hotly contested issue on the 2004 ballot. Here's a look at its highlights:

QUESTION: What does it say?
ANSWER: Voters will see this on the ballot: Proposal 04-02. A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO SPECIFY WHAT CAN BE RECOGNIZED AS A 'MARRIAGE OR SIMILAR UNION' FOR ANY PURPOSE. The proposal would amend the state constitution to provide that "the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose."

Q: What will it do?
A: Prohibit public officials in Michigan from recognizing or according marriage benefits to anyone other than heterosexual couples. That means public officials could not record or otherwise recognize a same-sex marriage and would not be required to provide marriage benefits (for example, spousal health care coverage) to the partners of unmarried employees.

Beyond that, proponents and opponents disagree about the amendment's reach.

Q: Why is it needed?
A: Proponents, led by Citizens for the Protection of Marriage, say the amendment is needed to preclude a redefinition of marriage by judicial action as has occurred in other places. Most notably and recently in Massachusetts, where the state Supreme Court ruled that a prohibition on same-sex marriage was illegal discrimination. Traditional marriage is the foundation of society and vital to the well being of children, they say.

Opponents, led by the Coalition for a Fair Michigan, say it is not. Michigan has a law that prohibits the recognition of same-sex marriage and should not amend its constitution to limit rights, they say.

Q: Is Michigan the only state taking the issue to voters?
A: No. Ten other states have elections on the definition of marriage scheduled for Nov. 2. Louisianans will vote Sept. 18. Missouri voters approved a marriage amendment in August. Voters in four other states adopted constitutional amendments limiting marriage rights between 1998 and 2000.

Q: Would the Michigan amendment prohibit civil unions?
A: Yes. At least as the term is in common use today -- official sanction of a marriage-like relationship between two people of the same sex. Of course, Michigan does not currently recognize such arrangements.

But both sides in the debate agree that the amendment is intended to, and almost certainly would, prevent the Legislature from creating an alternative form of recognition for same-sex relationships.

Q: What about employee benefits accorded to domestic partners and their dependents by some municipalities and public universities?
A: Proponents and opponents of the amendment say they would be prohibited to the extent they mimic benefits for married employees. Opponents argue that an unspecified number of children would be unjustly deprived of health care in the process. Proponents say they believe the number would be small and that alternative coverage could be made available.

Existing contracts between public employers and employee organizations that provide such benefits would not be affected, but those provisions could not be renewed in subsequent contracts, proponents say. Opponents claim existing contracts might be subject to legal challenge.

Q: Would the prohibitions apply to employers in the private sector?
A: Proponents say no; opponents say maybe.

Q: Why not just prohibit same-sex marriage and be done with it?
A: Drafters of the amendment concluded that if the language did not specifically address other arrangements, it would leave the door open for courts to require that gay and lesbian relationships be recognized as marriages in every respect except name. That, they say, is what happened in Vermont, the only state that officially recognizes civil unions.

Q: Will the additional language -- "similar union for any purpose" -- invite lawsuits if the amendment is adopted?
A: Of course.

Julius Zomper, spokesman for the Fair Michigan group, says marriage amendment lawsuits will become a cottage industry in Michigan. Zomper predicted the Michigan language, which he describes as among the most expansive proposed anywhere in the country, will ultimately be struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court as too vague to be enforced.

Patrick Gillen, an attorney with the Thomas More Law Center who helped draft the amendment, disagrees. But given the nature of the debate, litigation is inevitable, he says.

Gillen also notes that every significant constitutional amendment ever enacted has been extensively interpreted by courts. Furthermore, he says, simplifying the language -- or even dropping the proposal altogether -- wouldn't put an end to litigation over marriage rights.

Q: If approved by voters, will this put an end to the debate?
A: No.

Advocates of same-sex marriage have not been dissuaded by electoral setbacks elsewhere. In six statewide votes around the country on the issue since 1998, backers of traditional marriage have failed to win by a greater than a 2-1 margin only once (in Hawaii, in 1998, where the yes vote was 59.2 percent).

But legal challenges to the states' refusal to recognize nontraditional marriage have increased.

While Michigan's constitutional amendment presumably would withstand challenge in state courts, it still would be the likely target of a federal lawsuit. Some legal observers believe that the issue cannot be settled by anything short of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution or decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Q: What kind of campaigns should we expect?
A: It depends in large part on how successful each side is organizing and raising money.

Citizens for the Protection of Marriage put on a remarkable performance collecting 500,000 petition signatures without having much of either in place at the outset. The group plans to continue to rely heavily on a grassroots participation, especially from the religious community and social conservatives. Campaign director Marlene Elwell says she also is trying to raise money for a media campaign.

Fair Michigan is drawing its support from more politically active sectors, including business and labor groups, and among opinion leaders. Zomper says the group hopes the Michigan campaign will attract national attention, and the money to pay for a robust media campaign.

Q: Would Michigan's national reputation and business climate suffer if public entities could not offer benefits to same-sex couples?
A: Opponents of the proposal say they believe a prohibition on benefits for same-sex couples would harm employee recruitment, especially at public universities, and send a signal that Michigan is an unwelcoming, intolerant place.

Proponents of the amendment say they don't believe domestic partner benefits are a significant factor in the state's overall reputation or business climate.

Q: Is the ballot proposal being pushed by Republicans because they think it will increase the turnout of voters who will support President George W. Bush?
A: The ballot proposal committee is officially nonpartisan. The Michigan GOP has endorsed the proposal, while state Democrats generally regard it as unnecessary and divisive.

The effect on turnout, however, is uncertain in a presidential election year, especially one in which passions are running as high as they seem to be on Bush and Democratic opponent John Kerry. Even less certain is whether higher turnout would help Bush, since polling indicates some of the strongest support for the amendment is among African-American voters, who are expected to vote overwhelmingly for Kerry.

Gay Republicans...

I have a hard time understanding Gay Republicans....This is from the DNC

Radically Anti-Gay State Platforms Reveal GOP's True Colors
Washington, D.C. - Republican state party platforms from across the country reveal the true extent of the anti-gay, homophobic GOP agenda just as the national party mounts its upcoming convention.

"Republicans will trot out pro-gay moderates like Rudy Guliani at their upcoming convention in an attempt to masquerade the party's real agenda from the American people," said Eric Stern, Director of GLBT Outreach at the Democratic National Committee. "Well, these state platforms rip that mask right off and expose the truth. By refusing to put an end to the discrimination found in his own party's platforms, Bush is telling America that he agrees with these divisive and dangerous beliefs. The proof is in the writing."

A sampling of language included in the platforms is below.

Oregon Republican Party Platform
"We believe all forms of homosexuality and the so-called homosexual agenda are morally wrong and damaging to society in the long term. We oppose…adoption and foster parenting as a moral transgression against the party."

Iowa Republican Party Platform
"We support a landlord's right to refuse leasing property to cohabiting homosexuals based on moral grounds."

Minnesota Republican Party Platform
"We should amend the U.S. Constitution and the Minnesota Constitution to define marriage as the legal union between a man and a woman. We oppose civil unions or their legal equivalents between same-sex couples."

Texas Republican Party Platform (Bush's home state)
"The Party believes that the practice of sodomy tears at the fabric of society…homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have been ordained by God, recognized by our country's founders, and shared by the majority of Texans."

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

You can tell I am at home by myself watching a lot of tv. Today I am watching Hedwig and the Angry Inch This movie is very strange - but I love it.

We have rented in before from Video Land of Mount Pleasant. I need to find a video store in Bay City/Saginaw that has independent films.

If you have not seen Hedwig, I suggest you watch it. It is about a transgendered man from East Berlin and his adventures in the US. It is very musical and very funny.

It has a cult like following - comparable to Rocky Horror Picture show. I really enjoy the music. I have heard that it is also an off-Broadway musical.

Check it out - it was in the IFC channel today, and I am certain you can find it on again !

Gay

Today is a day for the GLBT history books!!!
As many of you know, today history was made in Massachusetts!!!!

The first legally married same sex couple wedding were performed today!

I am very excited to see this. I know that there is a lot of backlash associated with same-sex weddings...so I hope for the best in Michigan. Even if same sex weddings are found to be against the law, I think todays weddings shows America that something has to be done for GLBT people.

I urge you to sign the million for marriage petition below to tell America that you want your friends and family to be able to marry!!!

Lance Bass

Lance Bass here in Mt Pleasant!!!
I can't believe that I forgot to post this eariler!!!

This past weekend, our favorite *NYSNC member "Lance Bass" was here at CMU. He came to CMU to talk about the music/entertainment industry. His "Lecture" was quite boring. But he was a hottie!

Check out the story Here

Many audience members asked questions about the future of his band; his sex life; etc.

It was kind of fun. Brianna stated that she was embarrased to be a female after listening to his many fans. A lot of desperate sounding ladies were in the house that night :)

Here is a pic of Lance. He is a cute boy !!!!

I used to have a roommate that was obsessed with him! This picture is for you Laura!!!

QAF

QAF!!!!
Tonight was the second episode of Queer As Folk season #4.

Queer as Folk is probably my favorite show on television today (since Sex in the City has ended :( ) This season seems to be great! To combat all of the gay bashing going on, one of the main characters is starting a "Pink Patrol" that is out to protect gays from being beat up.

This reminds me of something that I talked about this past weekend to ryan. I was considering getting a gun to protect myself. There is a gay gun group called the "pink pistols". They are a GLBT gun users group. I don't know if i could ever use a gun, but I do agree that people need to be protected.

It is a confusing subject.

goodnight

***Drag Show Comes to CMU***
This past weekend, The Kinsey Sicks "Dragapella" performed on CMU's Campus.

It was an amazing show. I have been to Chicago before to see drag shows before, and Dragapella performed on the same scale.

It was fun to see the all of the cute gay boys out to see them. I don't think I have seen so many GLBT people in Mt Pleasant before.

The Kinsey Sicks did a lot of anti-George W. stuff...so that was fun!

Pride Week
Tonight was an intresting night. CMU is sponsoring GLBT Pride Week. Ryan and I were invited to be on a panel discussion following a Gay History movie. After the hour long movie (which was great!) we joined 4 others in a panel discussion. It was nice to hear what people had to say.

Along side us was the Director of Minority Student Services, A representative from Michigan Equality in Lansing, the president of CMU GSA, and us!

We were invited to speak from the perspective of a young committed couple.

It really made me think. I need to come ALL THE WAY OUT OF THE CLOSET!!! I am tired of lying to some members of my family and to some of my co-workers. Either love me or hate me....I don't really care!

On a different note...Work sucks. So far this week I have worked 44 hours. And I have at least 10 more hours to work tomorrow! I have been extremely tired this week. I am looking forward to a couple of days off this weekend. We will have some friends visiing, but it should be relaxing.

Have a good week!
