"I Don't Want Your Name Showing Up On Any Lists"
At many times throughout the year, my boss uses this line on us. He wants us to get something done on time, so that my name does not end up on a list that is distributed to all the company.
Recently, he used this line during a routine conference call. Every year my company president pledges $100,000 to a well deserved charity. I love to suport charities if I am able to. What I don't like is being told what I need to give.
We are given a "Contribution Guideline" that we are stongly encouraged to oblige by. If we don't contribute this amount, our name appears on the infamous "List."
Years With Company --------Donation Amount
10 years or more-----------No less than $1000
6-9 years -----------------No less than $750
4-5 years------------------No less than $500
2-3 years------------------No less than $300
less than 1 year-----------No less than $150
As you can imagine...My name is on the list year after year. I do send a check...I want to participate as much as I can. Ryan and I give hundreds of dollars a year to non-profit organizations. I just think it is crazy for a company to mandate this!
What would you do???

well... unfortunetly, they are a private company and have the right to mandate this. Michigan being an "at-will" employer state, they could even fire you for not meating these employee requirements if they really wanted to. But, since everything is arguable in court, I would say of you are ever "punished" for not meating these "requirements" then contact a lawyer.
My company hands out United Way envelopes every year. And every year I hand mine in blank with a note that I donate to charities on my own time and in my own manner.
