What's In a Name???

The other day, The Detroit Free Press had a story about how a child's name can harm them in the future. One economist says that sterotypes can harm black kids' chances of success. What causes this???

According to the article, It's not the name itself that causes poor grades...It is the impression it gives educators who - biased by the names' uniqueness and their own sterotypes about parents who would bestow such names of a child - don't set high goals for the children

Many of my friends are currently teachers (or going to school to be one!) Please don't judge a book by its cover!

On other news about names...The same article lists the most popular names in 2004 for parents to name their children.

Here are the most common names in Michigan for both boys and girls.
BOYS

Jacob
Ethan
Michael
Andrew
Joshua
Joseph
Matthew
Ryan
Nicholas
Tyler

GIRLS

Emma
Madison
Emily
Olivia
Hannan
Alexis
Grace
Abigall
Elizabeth
Samantha

Some crazy names that people of Detroit have named their babies include: Shade, TReasure, Romance, Silver, Gold, Corvette, Pharone, Triniti, JaeShwne, Shantaja, Joyeux, and Gevon.

Have you heard new names recently? I guess good old Larry is just too boring these days!

I have two friends that have had baby girls this year and they named them Noel and Kensington (Kenzie for short). I'm glad to see they picked names that are not in the top 10!
