90 Days...
After watching all of the craziness going on with the Schiavo case...I am making it loud and clear here...Let me live for 90 Days!!!!
If I am ever in a situation like Mrs. Schiavo, I would hope that my family would NOT let me hang on forever. As much as the thought of starving to death scares me a lot, it sure beats the alternative of "living" like Mrs. Schiavo.
I know I need to get something in writing very soon...Just in case! Ryan's personal belief is that he would like to stay connected as long as possible. It would be very hard for me to see Ry attached to machines for the rest of his life. I have talked to my parents about this issue. I would hope that my parents would "Pull the plug." I know that Ryan would respect my wishes...Even if it differs from his beliefs and wishes. I just hope that my parents and Ryan could agree on the "right" course of action.
What irks me the most about Terri Schiavo's case is that fact that Congress and the president have gotten involved. Why in the world would Congress pass a bill that only effects ONE person. We have laws for a reason...And the separation of powers between the branches of gov't are extremely important. It just seems so strange that Congress would pass a law allowing her parents the chance to go to federal court. It doesn't look like it will matter though...It seems that the federal judges have decided not to hear this case. Is congress setting a dangerous precedent by passing a law specifically for one person???
The Schiavo case is a little more complicated with all of the adultery charges coming out. Michigan State Rep. Joel Sheltrown has just introduced a bill that would prevent adulterous husbands or wives from keeping food or medical treatment from a spouse who's unable to make those decisions. I see the point of this legislation...but I wonder how the state will prove a spouse is not being faithful.
According to the Detroit Freepress, "Under Michigan law, medical care cannot be withheld from a patient unless he or she has specifically asked that it be withheld. Those wishes can be carried out through a living will or by giving a trusted family member or friend durable power of attorney for medical decisions."
I highly recommend downloading a Power of Attorney and Living Will. I know I will be filling out both of these documents very soon. Click above to access these documents from www.freep.com
